We can't believe how fast this month has flown by! Time in Koh Samui seems to move at a different pace. On one hand, it feels like we’ve accomplished so much, yet on the other, it seems like we've only just arrived.
Our first 10 days were a bit of a challenge, even though we were thrilled about our new life abroad. Adjusting to the tropical heat, overcoming jet lag, and stepping out of our comfort zones tested our resolve. 🤷🏻♀️ We had moments of doubt, questioning whether slow-traveling to Southeast Asia at this time of year was the best decision for our family. Not everything has been picture-perfect, but we've found our rhythm now.
Let’s start with the star of the show: Mini. Our little trooper has adapted incredibly well to our new surroundings. She loves going to daycare and has already made some friends. We are extremely grateful for the amazing educators who care for her every day.
Mini's adventurous palate has been exposed to so many new flavours. I must say that we're impressed with her willingness to try new things. Introducing her to the local fruits, vegetables, and Thai cuisine has been fascinating.
We're so proud of Mini's swimming progress. She used to be the baby who wouldn't touch sand or go near the sea, but now she loves playing in the sand and searching for Dory for hours.
Our culinary adventures have been one of the highlights of our time here. Eating out in Thailand is so cheap, and the food is both delicious and healthy. We usually start our day with breakfast at home, thanks to an amazing bakery we found. Every couple of days, Joe goes out to pick up fresh bread for us.
During the week, Joe and I make lunch our little date time, trying out new restaurants or coffee shops. You might already know about my love affair with coffee shops! 🙃 We've been pleasantly surprised with most of the places we've tried.
Evenings vary depending on my work schedule. When I’m working, we stay in and cook. But if we’re free, we love going out to try new dishes. We've made it a habit to visit Fisherman’s Village night market on Monday nights, which is delicious. We’re documenting all these delicious discoveries and can’t wait to share our foodie experiences with you.
Beyond the food, we've been enjoying a variety of family activities. We've hiked to waterfalls and secret gardens, snorkelled at Silver Beach, and visited several other beaches in Samui. We're documenting all our beach visits and plan to share our top five favorites by the end of our stay. So far, we can say we’re not fans of Chewang Beach—it’s overrated. Oops, we said it!
Our trip to Koh Tao is our highlight of the month. We loved the vibe, the energy and the marine life. You can read more about it here. We're going back next weekend.
We've learned a few lessons this month.
Withdrawing cash at ATMs can get expensive. Each withdrawal comes with a local fee of 220 baht, plus whatever fees our home bank charges. Since many places only take cash, we end up at the ATM more often than we’d like.
We've brought way too many pants, socks and some of our t-shirts are too thick for this weather.
Exercising outdoors is tough for us Canadians. The humidity is intense, so unless we get up at the crack of dawn, it’s too hot and sticky. Plus, there aren’t many sidewalks, making running or walking around our neighbourhood a bit dangerous with all the cars and scooters. Air-conditioned gyms are rare on the island. So, we swim laps in the pool. 💪🏻
